708-367-1250The NUCOR Steel Mill job was a ground-up industrial project in Kankakee, IL, that included specialty excavation and backfill for foundation mill components. Crews dug large 60-ft. x 60-ft. pits 15-20 feet deep for steel manufacturing equipment and processes. These “complex structural boxes” will be used as a furnace pit, cooling racks, straighteners, cutters and for other steps in the steel-making process.
An owner-direct job for NUCOR Steel Corporation, with CV Engineering, NUCOR is an 80-acre site. Crews performed 600,000 CY of earthwork, 150,000 CY of foundation structural excavation and placed 80,000 tons of aggregate. Complicating matters, the structural excavation took place in the winter and the backfill was done in the spring.
They utilized Quadtrac scrapers with pull pans for the mass earthwork and articulating trucks loaded by large excavators for the foundation excavations.

Witech was a great asset to the project providing great equipment and supervision for the job. Your movement of over 400,000 CY of dirt, placement of 80,000 tons of aggregate, and structural excavation was representative of the quality work that Witech performs. The majority of this work took place in the worst weather conditions we have experienced and the project was safe, on schedule, and on budget.
