Laraway Overburden Removal

Project Details

In the mining sector, Witech performed overburden removal at the Laraway limestone quarry in Joliet, IL, for Vulcan Materials Corp.

The footprint of the project was small, but the challenge of this job was the depth of the dig. Crews removed 200,000 CY of overburden as deep as 60 feet to reach the rock layer, hauling the material to other areas onsite that are no longer being mined. This quarry has been open a long time; the project prepared for expansion into a new area.

Limestone is used for road base, concrete, at asphalt plants and as structural backfill. They utilized mainly articulating trucks with large excavators to complete the project.
