With over three decades of experience in heavy construction, Ted Smith brings a deep well of knowledge, precision, and passion to his role as Survey/CAD Manager at Witech. His journey in the industry began during college, when a summer job in heavy construction sparked a lifelong interest in earthwork and site development.

At Witech, Ted plays a critical role in shaping the success of projects—managing survey data, producing 3D models, performing quantity takeoffs, and ensuring field teams are equipped with accurate, actionable information. His attention to detail, solution-focused mindset, and in-depth understanding of engineering principles help drive high standards across the board.

What Ted enjoys most is the challenge—no two jobs are exactly the same. Each site offers unique details that keep him engaged and constantly learning. He’s also deeply proud to be part of a team that values excellence and operates like a close-knit family.

Throughout his career, Ted has worked on a wide variety of large-scale projects, including boat harbors, golf courses, industrial developments, residential mass grading, aggregate quarries, and interstate highways. No matter the scope, his pride in craftsmanship and commitment to quality remain constant.

He’s particularly drawn to bulldozers—not just for their power and design, but for the artistry required to grade a site with precision and finesse.

A native of Oswego, IL, Ted credits his strong work ethic to his parents and mentors. Outside of work, you’ll often find him riding his motorcycle down winding, tree-lined roads, competing in an APA pool league, catching live music, or grilling out and spending quality time with his kids. He looks up to people like his former boss and friend Matt, who exemplifies intelligence, humor, and generosity.

Ted also believes the future of the industry lies in technology—tools like integrated grade control systems align perfectly with the skills of a tech-savvy new generation, making heavy construction as exciting as ever for those just entering the field.
