Project Dixie, an E-Commerce facility in Markham, IL, exemplifies the kind of projects Witech can complete in the industrial sector. The 122-acre e-commerce center required earthwork construction of 6 detention basins, 2 compensatory storage areas, an 800,000 SF building pad and over 1.8 million SF of pavement. It required massive amounts of dirt to be moved: 700,000 CY of earthwork, including 200,000 CY of structural import brought in by semi-truck from offsite.
The site was challenging due to the existing infrastructure around the development as well as the existing parcel itself. Because of the size of the project and its location, the material had to be hauled in order to complete the appropriate subgrade elevations. Typically sites can be lowered to reduce any import, but because of the existing infrastructure adjacent to this specific project, lowering of the site elevation was not an option. Approximately 30 acres of the site needed to be environmentally remediated and capped. The other 90 acres of the site had an extensive amount of unsuitable, wet soil. Every ounce of soil onsite that was re-used as structural fill – approximately 1.5 million SY – needed chemical modification and stabilization to add strength.
That was just one of many “unknowns” on this project for Ryan Companies US, Inc., but with an aggressive 18-month schedule and several critical path milestones to achieve, Witech had to come up with plans to deal with every challenge. Work included specialty excavation and backfill of an 800,000 SF building, placement of 100,000 tons of aggregate and demolition, sorting and screening of existing soils from what was formerly a residential development and industrial auto development.
Ryan Companies has a motto of “Building Lasting Relationships”. This applies to our clients, subcontractors vendors, and all companies that we work with on a daily basis. In my 30+ years of being in the commercial contracting business, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many good subcontractors, but Witech Company is a great subcontractor.
Over the past several years, we’ve partnered with Witech on several projects. Their expertise in preplanning and insight into site management have greatly contributed to the economic execution and success of our projects. Once on-site, their professionalism, cooperation, commitment to safety, and production sets the standard for expectations of our subcontractors. From the inception of each project, Witech has brought energy, attention to detail, and genuine concern for the project. When problems are encountered, Witech has brought practical and fair solutions to the table. It’s clear that Witech values Building Relationships every bit as much as we do at Ryan.
